The government of Zimbabwe has charged a dentist from Minnesota for killing a famous lion near one of the country’s national parks.

In July, Dr. Walter James Palmer killed the popular old lion called Cecil during a hunt near the Hwange [WANG-gey] National Park. According to the government of Zimbabwe, the hunt was illegal because it was done without the necessary permits. Aside from Palmer, the government also charged the professional guide and the owner of the private land where Cecil was killed.

The killing of Cecil the lion provoked anger among many people around the world. In fact, a citizen from New York started a White House petition to send Palmer to Zimbabwe so he can be tried for illegally killing the lion. As of mid-August, more than 230,000 people have already signed the said petition.

In his defense, Palmer said that he was misled by his guide, Theo Bronkhorst. Bronkhorst, however, stated that he had all the needed permits to kill a lion outside the boundaries of the national park.

Killing animals that are endangered is part of a practice called “trophy hunting.” For this practice, a large number of North American and European hunters go to Africa to hunt rare and large animals like lions and elephants.

Trophy hunters usually pay a large amount of money to be able to hunt in a certain area. According to these hunters, trophy hunting actually helps conserve animal species, as the proceeds from this activity are said to go to environmental or animal-focused advocacy groups.
